What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag | A Simple Guide for Expecting Moms
As a mom of three, I’ve been through the hospital bag packing process a few times and these are the items I truly found helpful. Before you start packing, I just want to say, this list is meant to be helpful, not overwhelming. Take a moment to read through it and decide what feels right for you. You may already have many of these items at home, and there’s absolutely no need to go out and buy everything new. The goal is simply to bring a few comforting things that will help you feel more relaxed and prepared during your hospital stay.
As your due date gets closer, one of the most exciting milestones of pregnancy is packing your hospital bag. It’s a small task that suddenly makes everything feel very real, your baby will be here soon.
Many parents ask what they truly need for those first 24–48 hours at the hospital. While the hospital provides the medical essentials, bringing a few comforting items from home can make those early moments feel calmer and more cozy.
Here are some of my favorite hospital bag essentials that many new moms love.
Cozy Pajamas (2 pairs)
After delivery, comfort becomes everything. Soft, loose button-down pajamas are perfect for the hospital because they make skin-to-skin time and nursing much easier.
Look for fabrics that feel breathable and gentle on sensitive postpartum skin. A cozy pair of pajamas can make you feel much more like yourself during recovery.
A Soft Bathrobe
A lightweight bathrobe is one of those items many moms are glad they packed.
It’s perfect for:
staying warm during nighttime feedings
quick hallway walks
visitors stopping by

Comfortable Slippers
Hospital floors can be cold, and you may be walking the halls a bit after delivery.
A pair of supportive slippers makes a big difference when you’re up and moving around. Choose something easy to slip on and off. I loved mine!!
Nursing Bras
If you plan to breastfeed, having a few comfortable nursing bras in your bag can be very helpful.
Look for soft, wireless options that provide gentle support and allow easy access for feeding.
A Small Nightlight
Hospital rooms can be surprisingly bright at night.
A small portable nightlight creates a softer glow for diaper changes and feedings without fully waking you or the baby.
Many parents say this small item makes the room feel much more peaceful during those first nights.
Fuzzy Socks
Warm fuzzy socks are one of the simplest comforts you can pack.
Hospitals can be chilly, and cozy socks can make a big difference when you’re resting or walking around your room.
A Soft Blanket From Home
Hospital blankets are practical, but bringing a soft blanket from home can add a comforting, familiar touch to your room.
Many moms enjoy wrapping up in something cozy during skin-to-skin time with their newborn.
An Extra-Long Phone Charger
This is one item many parents forget and end up wishing they packed.
Hospital outlets are often far from the bed, so an extra-long charger makes it much easier to keep your phone nearby for photos, messages, and FaceTime with family.
A Small Portable Fan
Labor and recovery can sometimes feel warm and uncomfortable.
A small portable fan can help keep you cool and comfortable during labor and while resting afterward.
Silver Nipple Covers
For breastfeeding moms, silver nursing cups can be incredibly soothing during the early days of nursing.
Many mothers love these for their natural healing properties and comfort between feedings.
One More Thing to Prepare Before Baby Arrives
While packing your hospital bag, many parents also start thinking about how quickly those first days with their baby will pass.
Those tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, and delicate newborn features change so quickly.
If you’re expecting and planning ahead, it’s also the perfect time to reserve your newborn photography session so these early moments can be preserved forever.
As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I recommend booking during pregnancy to ensure availability around your due date.
